Ova Motion is an alternative to Rive with the same way of working: design, animate, wire a state machine, bind data and ship a small runtime file. It differs in that projects are saved on your device first and work fully offline, it opens .riv files, it has Luau scripts and an MCP server for AI agents, and its runtimes are MIT or Apache-2.0.
- Opens .riv
- Yes: artboards, animations, state machines and view models
- Projects
- On your device first, synced to the cloud when you choose
- Offline
- The desktop app always; the web editor keeps working when the connection drops
- Editing together
- Live cursors and edits; offline edits merge on reconnect
- AI
- egg-mcp server and a built-in agent with your own key
- Runtime license
- MIT or Apache-2.0
What works the way you expect
Coming from Rive, the ideas carry over one to one. Artboards hold the design; animations are timelines of keys; a state machine with inputs, layers, transitions and listeners decides what plays; view models bind data to text, colour and motion; nested artboards reuse pieces; a runtime plays the exported file and your code sets the inputs.

Bringing a Rive file over
- Export your file from Rive as .riv.
- In Ova Motion choose Open file on the Home screen, or drop the .riv on the window.
- Artboards, animations, state machines and view models come in. A few features are converted as closely as Ova Motion allows.
- Run it, then export an .egg and play it with an Ova Motion runtime.
When to stay with Rive
If you depend on a runtime Ova Motion does not have yet (React Native, for example), or on a Rive feature the import cannot convert, keep using Rive for that project. Both tools can live side by side.
